Police performed inspections on a semi truck that went careening off of an Interstate 25 overpass on Saturday and crushed a Lexus below. Their findings determined that brake problems are to blame for the accident.
Although the brakes clearly have problems, investigators are still trying to determine what exactly caused the driver to go over the side of the overpass.
The truck driver has been identified as Antonio Rodriguez, 55, of Denver. Rodriguez works for the S & S Trucking and Construction Company, which is also the owner of the truck.
A spokesperson for the company finds it hard to believe that there was a problem with the brakes. They stated that the trucks undergo inspection every day and that the drivers sign off on all the inspection checkpoints.
The accident occurred at about 10:56 a.m. on I-25 just near Belleview Avenue. Rodriguez was headed north when all of a sudden, he lost control of the dump truck, rammed through the concrete barriers, and went flying off the freeway. The dump truck landed on a Lexus.
The man inside the Lexus has been identified as Sidney Levin, 78. Levin was rushed to Swedish Medical Center where doctors have listed him in critical condition
Rodriguez has been a veteran truck driver for years and he has all the proper licenses. There is no indication that drugs or alcohol played any part in contributing to the accident.
Police have not issued any tickets to Rodriguez.
Rodriguez is known around the company for being reliable and professional. The company also has a clean record for maintaining their trucks.
According to a spokesman from the Colorado State Patrol, the truck involved in the accident was grounded earlier this year following an exhaust problem.
The discovery of the exhaust problem specified a timeframe for the company to complete the necessary repairs and submit the proper paperwork.
Investigators are still trying to determine if the truck underwent the proper and necessary fixes before being on the road again.
The company was fined $2,000 late last year because some of their drivers were in violation of commercial vehicle laws. The drivers did not have the proper credentials to drive trucks at the time of the investigation last year.
The Colorado State Patrol will now inspect all the nine trucks that S & S Trucking and Construction Company has as part of their fleet.
